Trip Overview

Everything you need to know about the experience, environment and journey ahead.

Experience one of Iceland's most extraordinary long-distance trekking adventures, combining two of the country's most celebrated hiking routes into one unforgettable six-day journey. Beginning beneath the spectacular Skógafoss waterfall on Iceland's southern coast, our route follows the dramatic Fimmvörðuháls trail before joining the world-famous Laugavegur Trail and continuing north towards the colourful volcanic mountains of Landmannalaugar. Over approximately 80 kilometres, we'll travel through an astonishing variety of landscapes, from cascading waterfalls and snow-covered mountain passes to ancient lava fields, black volcanic deserts, deep glacial valleys and steaming geothermal landscapes. This is a genuine wilderness trekking experience. Carrying our equipment and camping along the route, we'll encounter exposed mountain terrain, challenging river crossings, remote highland environments and some of the most remarkable scenery Iceland has to offer. Unlike the more commonly travelled north-to-south Laugavegur route, our adventure travels south to north, allowing us to finish among the spectacular rhyolite mountains and geothermal features of Landmannalaugar. Led by an experienced mountain leader, this adventure offers a rewarding combination of physical challenge, wilderness exploration and the opportunity to experience Iceland's incredible volcanic landscape on foot.

The Itinerary

1

Day 1

DAY 1 Skógar to Baldvinsskáli

Approx. 12 km | 4–6 hours | 1,000 m ascent Our adventure begins at the spectacular Skógafoss waterfall. Climbing alongside the Skógá River, we follow a series of impressive waterfalls as the landscape gradually becomes more rugged and remote. As we gain height, the lush green surroundings give way to open volcanic terrain. After crossing the river by footbridge, we continue towards Baldvinsskáli, situated high on the mountain between Iceland's great glaciers. Our first night introduces us to the remote highland environment that makes this trek so special.

2

Day 2

DAY 2 Baldvinsskáli to Þórsmörk

Approx. 14–16 km | 6–8 hours A spectacular mountain day takes us across the Fimmvörðuháls pass, where snowfields and volcanic landscapes sit between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers. We'll pass through the remarkable lava fields created during the 2010 volcanic eruption before tackling some of the route's most exciting terrain. The trail traverses exposed ridges, including Heljarkambur and Kattarhryggir, where short sections are protected by fixed chains. Panoramic views across the glaciers and Þórsmörk valley reward our efforts before we descend into a completely different landscape of green mountains, valleys and woodland. We finish at Þórsmörk, one of Iceland's most beautiful highland locations.

3

Day 3

DAY 3 Þórsmörk to Emstrur

Approx. 15–16 km | 6–8 hours Leaving the green surroundings of Þórsmörk, we climb through woodland and out onto the vast volcanic highlands as we begin our journey along the Laugavegur Trail. This section introduces us to Iceland's glacial rivers, with crossings requiring careful assessment of water depth, flow and conditions. Beyond the rivers, we cross expansive black volcanic landscapes with distant views towards glaciers and rugged mountains. One of the day's highlights is the impressive canyon scenery around the Markarfljót river system. We eventually reach Emstrur, our remote overnight stop surrounded by vast volcanic wilderness.

4

Day 4

DAY 4 Emstrur to Álftavatn

Approx. 15–16 km | 6–8 hours Today we continue across the dramatic volcanic deserts of Iceland's southern highlands. The landscape is dominated by black sands, distant mountain ridges and wide-open views across the Mælifellssandur region. Following the marked trail, we'll encounter several rivers, including crossings around Hvanngil. Some are bridged, while others may require wading, depending on conditions. The scenery gradually changes as we approach Álftavatn, where a beautiful mountain lake sits beneath the surrounding volcanic peaks. Our campsite offers an incredible setting for another night in the Icelandic wilderness.

5

Day 5

DAY 5 Álftavatn to Hrafntinnusker

Approx. 11–12 km | 5–7 hours One of the most visually spectacular days of the entire adventure. After leaving Álftavatn, we'll cross open highland terrain before climbing steeply towards Jökultungur. As we gain height, the scenery transforms into an extraordinary landscape of colourful rhyolite mountains, deep ravines, steaming geothermal vents and mineral-rich rock formations. The route continues through the Kaldaklofsfjöll mountains, offering some of the most distinctive volcanic scenery anywhere in Iceland. The final approach to Hrafntinnusker takes us across rugged high-level terrain, where lingering snow patches are possible even during summer. We spend our final night in the highlands, surrounded by a landscape unlike anywhere else on the trek.

6

Day 6

DAY 6 Hrafntinnusker to Landmannalaugar

Approx. 10–12 km | 4–5 hours Our final day brings a wonderful conclusion to the adventure. Leaving Hrafntinnusker, we follow undulating mountain trails across volcanic terrain before beginning our descent towards Landmannalaugar. The landscape becomes increasingly colourful, with remarkable shades of orange, yellow, red and green decorating the surrounding mountains. We pass the impressive Laugahraun lava field, where black obsidian rock contrasts with the colourful rhyolite slopes and geothermal features. A final descent brings us into Landmannalaugar, marking the completion of our six-day journey across Iceland's spectacular southern highlands. With time available, there may be an opportunity to enjoy the area's famous geothermal bathing pool before departing.

Is This Trip For You?

Fitness & Experience

Challenging mountain trek This adventure is suitable for fit and active individuals who enjoy multi-day mountain walking and are comfortable spending consecutive days in remote environments. While technical mountaineering experience is not normally required during suitable summer conditions, this is considerably more demanding than an ordinary walking holiday. Participants should be comfortable with: - Walking approximately 10–16 km per day for up to 8 hours. - Carrying a multi-day trekking backpack with personal camping equipment, food and clothing. - Sustained ascents and descents on uneven, loose and occasionally steep terrain. - Exposed mountain paths, potentially snow-covered sections and short chain-assisted passages. - Crossing unbridged glacial rivers where conditions permit. - Camping in remote locations with basic facilities and potentially challenging weather. Previous experience of multi-day trekking, mountain walking or backpacking is strongly recommended. Important: Icelandic weather can change extremely quickly. Strong winds, low temperatures, poor visibility and high river levels can significantly increase the difficulty of the trek. The mountain leader will make route and safety decisions based on prevailing conditions, and alternative arrangements may be necessary.
